Cost of membership: ok
Pros: very quiet club, especially for goodlife
Cons: sexist and rude personal trainers, some staff are friendly and sweet, others judge members and act like teens
Thoughts: a very bad representation of Goodlife
The best gym in the city is (and why): Goodlife Queen street. Better, friendlier staff and cleaner!

Cost of membership: Fair cost, depends on how much a person goes to the gym really more frequently, more bang for the buck. but overall the cost is reasonable. Would be nice if they gave longtime members a slight discount!
Pros:
Thoughts: I've been going to Goodlife gyms since 1999 and have few complaints about the Rideau location. It's my main gym because I live closest to it. Friendly staff always. Good trainers, good classes.
Cons: some people wish the world for a gym, but in the Rideau location it seems to me to be quite difficult for them to install individual showers. get over it. However, the gym could scrap that black mold off the ground and scrub the floors and walls of the shower area every few weeks. Disgusting.
Their equipment is starting to reach its end of life, hopefully they're saving up for this. They've slowly replaced free weights, treadmills, recumbent bikes, elliptical machines, and a few weight machines, but still need to replace the rest of them (the white weight machines).
The water fountains... they installed new ones (finally) and some halfwit comes up and presses on the black plastic lever to turn on the overhead tap to fill their water bottle and promptly snaps the lever. Replace the plastic lever with a METAL one. This has happened no less than about 5+ times. You'd think they'd catch on.
I don't believe they can do anything about the water pressure to the fountains, the water system in the Rideau centre may have something to do with that. Unsure. Who cares. Takes a few more seconds or go into the washroom and fill up at the sinks.
Toilets. Can they install maybe two fans in the place to suck up the stench from the frequently used toilets? ...another over near the showers to suck up moisture so it's not a sauna in the summer?
That's about it. Otherwise, great gym, no complaints.

Thoughts:
I travel alot and go to many Goodlife locations. The Rideau location is definately the worst. This week almost half the treadmills were out of order. The water fountain by the group fitness room only puts out a dribble in the four years I have been going here. Why does this location not have towel service? Its dirty, overcrowded, not maintained, smelly....and those gang showers need to go, along with whoever is supposed to be manageing this place.

The Manager Mike is a scum bag. I can't believe this guy still has a job with good life.
Once you get to know him, offer him money under the table for tanning packages, day pass's etc etc.
This guy will gladly accept 50% of the book value, and pocket it.
So many people i know have been scamming with him for a long time.
In fact, he splits "under the table" day pass money with certain employees.

They let a homeless man hang out in the facility. What type of gym allows this?
They know he's homeless.
Multiple people have confirmed this is indeed a homeless man. Welfare apparently pays for his pass.
Sure he has a membership, but come on.
He sits in the change room for hours, upon hours a day. Shaving, cleaning the sinks over and over...
Watching men in the sauna...
Watch your items in the change room i have been told he takes things when people aren't looking.

An Ottawa man who tried to cancel his gym membership on the weekend said Tuesday his gym not only refused his request, but called security guards who then roughed him up.
Last week, a CBC investigation revealed that some Canadian fitness clubs may have collected hundreds of millions of dollars by continuing to debit the accounts of former members after they tried to cancel their memberships.
In an IpsosReid poll for the CBC, 39 per cent of Canadian gymgoers reported problems with overbilling.
Computer programmer Christopher Probst has been trying to stop his membership at the Goodlife Gym in the Rideau Centre since August.
"I'm travelling all the time, so I don't really need it," he said.
A Goodlife manager wrote to Probst telling him he had to come in person to cancel his membership.
Probst is currently working in Portland, Oregon. But last weekend he was in Ottawa, so he went to the Rideau Centre to cancel his card.
But, he said, a staff member told him to go away and phone for an appointment. He said he told her he was on his way to the airport, and he continued to insist on canceling it then.
"She got up, and she said, 'Listen, I'm going to ask you to leave the gym, and I'm going to call security.' And, she said, I'm barring you from all Goodlifes across Canada, and I'm going to cancel your membership later,'" Probst said.
He said he wanted the contract cancelled immediately, and he was still waiting when two security guards arrived.
"They actually came screaming in my face, and I said to security, 'Is there a way we can discuss this civilly?' And they said, 'You need to leave now, I'm giving you two seconds.' And the next thing I know is that they're pummeling me, and I'm hearing, 'He's resisting arrest, he's resisting arrest," Probst said.
According to Probst, security guards handcuffed, and held him until police could take him into custody. However, the two police officers who arrived freed Probst, who was then able to catch his flight to Oregon. He said the officers also visited the gym to ensure that his membership finally was cancelled.
The Rideau Centre, which declined to comment on this incident, has banned Probst for five years. Goodlife didn't return calls.

This gym is generally poorly kept. It is usually crowded and very poorly ventilated. The change rooms are dirty, and distinctly smell like whoever last took a dump in the washroom section. The floors are gritty. The whole club is uncomfortably humid. There's usually a few cardio machines broken at a time. I feel like the few good reviews on this site are suspiciously enthusiastic, along with the fact that they advertise club events, I suspect that they're actually Goodlife employees.
Oh, and last week I got word (from a few people actually) that some guy was caught masturbating in the sauna while watching guys shower through the little window in the door. IS THAT TRUE? Either way it's enough to make me never want to work out there again.
I'm so glad the new Goodlife opened at St Laurent. I'd advise anyone in the downtown sector to go there instead. Their treadmills have builtin tvs, and they have shower stalls! No orgystyle shower like at Rideau.
Thank you for reading my review.

OMG! this is a great club. The most important part of this club is the staff! I would have never joined and started at all if it were not for how much the staff cares about their jobs and their clients. I'm not saying they are all perfect...but come on, who is? I don't remember the last time I was in any business with a staff mainly their 20's30's that are so organized and professional. i work with mostly 3040 year olds that act more like children than they ever would. I find the first impression of the club is great. i have always been greeted from day one with a genuine smile everyone i come in contact with. I was told I should join from my girlfriend who was signed up by the GM Mike a few years ago. I too met with him and he was great. i can walk up and talk to him any time about anything and he always seems genuinly interested in my opinions, remembers my name...and he seems pretty busy running things there to boot. As a matter of fact, I can't recall ever being able to speak to any GM at any business when I needed to. He seems to care about me as a person & not $$$$. That being said, This is the norm there from most of the staff i have ever spoke with. When it comes to all of the other stuff which I agree is pretty important... here is my list of favorites. Tons of amazing classes with amazing instructors. Check out their schedule and tell me they don't invest more $$$ in classes than many other places which are all included!! More cardio than any other gym i have been too plus lot's of weight equip. Other locations in the area to use...but i like Rideau the most.
My dislikes...i wish they were open a bit later on the weekends. I wish the tanning was included. lastly, what is the deal with the water fountains so much. i have been there now for over 2 years. I use the club on average 3 times a week and the water fountains were not working only for a week or so during this time until they replaced the old ones with a new ones. The temperature of the water is not that bad at all. It's cold in the slow times and cool in the peak times. It's wet all of the time. If all you care about is water...they make containers for you to carry while you wok out which solves the issue.

I've been a member for about 6 months now and I have to say that I really like this gym! I love the atmosphere there, it's become like a second home for me. I started around January which was pretty busy, but I understand, as I was explained by the person who signed me up, that it was part of the New Years rush they get. It's since died down and everything is extremely accessible. It has not only a lot more equipment than other gyms I've been to, but a lot nicer/newer equipment as well. And even though I'm not that into classes, there are a couple I was reccomended to try, so I did, and I liked them and hit them every now and then. Sometimes the staff isn't as friendly as they could be but it seems to be only when the club gets really busy and they are focussed on what they need to at the time, much like where I work. I also started with the introductory training package and I loved it and felt I learned a lot, even though I've worked out for many years. I also dislike that sometimes the water fountains are not as cold as I want them to be. I addressed the general manager about this issue and he informed me that it is due to the sheer volume of water it outputs that it can't keep up during busy times. I wasn't sure if he was telling the truth but my brother, who is a plummer, confirmed this. So I suggested to the manager that he upgrade the fountains. I hope the company does. All in all though, I love it and would reccomend it to my friends. That, and the scenery is fantastic!!! ;)

Sorry, this gym is crap. Warm water STILL!
Crappy Personal Trainers, equipment still always out of order. run out of out of order signs!! Oh, good news, they got TVs...how about WORKING EQUIPMENT!! How about TIGHT DUMBELLS!! How about CLEANING!!
Rob, I don't care about 70 classes if I take zero. And I don't care what personal rep counters say about warm water being better for ya, I want cold water coming out of water fountains.
OH, and all you saying to do a comment card, I have emailed head office many times, including a link to this page. GoodLife does not care and are only about the $$$.

Goodlife is a great gym. This location is not the best. I got my membership in toronto and they have the best gym. Its always clean, enough equipment, very friendly staff. This gym is not that bad. I have a tranier adn he is the nicest guy ever. He doesnt take it easy on me just because i complaine but he also knows when he has push me to my breaking point. I think you guys are bitching way to much. Do something about it! There are cards for a reason and the staff is there for a reason also. Stand up and say something its YOUR gym!

The staff at this location are laughable except for the few. The trainers are kids for the most part. I wouldn't want to be trained by someone in their early twenties as most people wouldn't. To top it off, a lot of these trainers use a site called "P.T. on the net" to attain client program designs for paying an annual $100 fee. what a blatant joke and a rip off. These kids are hired based on their physique as Goodlife's advertising strategies are purely aesthetically and sexually based. The trainers are pompous and walk around with an air of superiority and some can't even make eye contact with people in a cowardly fashion. Their showers are absolutely filthy.
What a peice of crap gym like most other Goodlifes, I can't wait until the Athletic Club opens at the train yard and I hope these guys put Goodlife out of business

I like this Gym, its really close to downtown and i can do my shopping afterwards. The only down fall is the music, somedays i swear the same song will play 23 times during my hour and a half work out. lol.. but besides that its a gym people not a spa, to the people that are always trash talking online, but cant talk to the staff about the problems they have with the gym are the real losers.

I'm a little surprised everyone here seems to hate it so much. I love it! It probably has a lot to do with the last gym I had a membership at. GoodLife is just amazing in comparison! Rows and rows of cardio equipment, so many fun group exercise classes to choose from, a wide variety of members, from intense weightlifters to casual exercisers and everyone in between. I've never felt out of place there, and I love going! In fact, if I can't go for a few days, I find I really miss it. It's not 100%, sure, but I just feel so happy and at home there. And I love that I have access to clubs all over the city! Considering my home, work and school are all in different areas, it's incredibly convenient. And the hours are improving all the time; Rideau's open until midnight Monday to Thursday now! And with 3 24hour locations in town, it's hard to argue that they don't accommodate for most schedules.
In a word: excellent.
And if any of you who have criticized GoodLife are still members, have you submitted comment cards? If not, you should! They seem to be really good about considering them, responding to them and reporting them to the head office, so it's worth a shot!

This location should really put a cap on the number of members that it can serve. I can't even count how many times I have gone and 1) spent 10 minutes trying to find / waiting to get a locker, and 2) had to wait and wait and wait for ANY equipment to become available (cardio OR weights). I'm afraid that I don't have the luxury of going at 10am every day to beat the rush (and there aren't any other Goodlife locations close to me), so as soon as my 1year membership expires, I'm going to kiss the place goodbye for good.

sorry bob, this gym sorta sucks. the only thing it has going for it is location. the place is filthy , the water fountain has been broken for like 2 months (i guess it isnt broken if you wedge your hand in manually) . the washrooms are frequently out of soap and paper towel. i go there i admit (location) but thats just cause i dont have rocks at home to lift up and down.
and finally their sales staff is horrible, i have several friends that tried to sign up for memberships but were over pressured to the point of giving up.

I have been reading about all of the nit picky whiners comments. Are you guys serious?? It appears many of you have clearly not been to more than a couple of clubs ro give the Rideau location a fair evaluation. It's not perfect by any means, but it is in a great location, Has more equipement than any other gym in Ottawa, & the staff are top notch in the industry. There is no other club that offers the amount of service and equipment for the buck! Value that is. Your concerned about warm fountains??? Has anyone ever been told that cold water is the opposite of what you should be drinking during or right after a workout. I did not see complaints about that club offering more than 70 classes a week! Has anyone even imagined what it must cost to have a club in the Rideau Centre...the overhead must be through the roof. No other company has ever lasted there for very long. I'm sure they can improve on things...but what about the company you work for...how great is that. I'm also sure they love the fact that you have taken the time to go on line and get paid to write whiney reviews about your fitness club. Do me favor. Go back to work.

I don't have too many problems with this gym. It is in a good location and convenient. However, the staff doesn't never greets you or thanks you for coming and the girls at the front seem more interested in chatting and applying makeup than speaking with customers. On a positive note, there are always a lot of lockers and the machines are usually in a decent state of operation. I would recommend it to a friend, however reluctantly.

Alana I came upon this site actually looking for a new gym in the Rideau area. The only thing keeping me here is that I work beside the mall so it's easy to get there for my lunch hour or sometimes at night. That's it. I agree with most of the comments above. Agree that at night the cleanliness is horrid! It seems the cleaning staff is done at 5 and no one takes over. I use the Lesmilles classes, which is the only thing I find outstanding about this gym. The fountain near the studio is always warm to even hot, the other usually broken. The treadmills and most other cardio machines are out of order so often that they actually run out of "Out Of Order" signs! I barely use the weight section, but it's because no one ever puts their wieghts away at all, and staff doesn't seem to care to remind guests or put them away themselves, though enough of them walk around soliciting members. I am constantly bugged with "Have you considered a personal trainer" "Do you have any friends you want to invite to workout for free", and when I tell them that I would love to use the weight room but there's these huge weights that are a workout in its own to put away, they usually just say "OK, thanks" and move on totally diregarding my complaint. The freeweights, or at least the lighter ones are often so loose for days at a time I worry they'll come apart on me. It seems to me this GoodLife is more concerned with getting more members therefore more money then keeping members. A few of us have been looking and pretty soon I'm going to just start driving to Premier Fitness which my husband says isn't that great but still way better then GoodLife Rideau. I really hope someone from head office reads this because it's unacceptable. Thank you

Vic Agree with everything said. Warm water fountains, lack of too many pieces, cleanliness ect make this gym just under satisfactory. The dumbells are always loose for days on end, with all the rubber fraying, the staff doesn't get on members to put away weights as their always on the wrong trees and still racked ect. People are always on their cell phones. I agree with the pec/rear delt fly machine being only in the personal "rep counter" trainer section. Wish they also had some simple extras like another EZ curl bar. The staff also seems to think that 15 minutes to close is time to get everyone out. GoodLife's weekend hours suck, and here they are trying to get you out so they can get out fast and early. You're getting paid, it's something I pay for and all I'm trying to do is train in the proper alotted time. I could go on. It's got the makings of an ok gym if well maintained and cleaned and backed off the insane salesmanship. But this is moments away from Parliment and should be the flagship gym of GoodLife ala GoodLife Union station TO. Someone really should do something.

Absolutely appalled by this gym. I use it only when I absolutely have to. Too often the cardio machines are broken for days on end, as with the water fountains. How can a water fountain even break that often? There is no rear delt machine available to general clients, if you try to use the only one in the personal training area the staff will rudely remove you from it. This gym also sports the worst shower room arrangement I have ever seen. No control over water temperature, and awkward open shower placements.

The customer service staff seem to always be harassing you about inviting a friend or giving your name for something, and if you politely refuse they stomp off in a huff. The treadmills are continually broken, the water fountains continually break, there was a time when there was only one water fountain working in the entire place. As for the change room it is disgusting after 7pm. The bathrooms are dirty, in one bathroom stall there has been a garbage can with a cardboard sign attached to it reading "not a garbage" for about 5 months because a pipe is leaking water! There is a problem with the water for showers, some days there is no hot water and others there is no cold, it makes it difficult if you want to run to the gym and then go to work. I love the group ex classes, that is one of the few positives. The only reason I go is because of the location.

This gym is alright as long as you can get to it. Buried in the basement of the Rideau Center this gym is mainly used by the dedicated. Not considered to be a 'beginner' gym.
