Cost of membership:$60/month
Pros:proximity to my house
Cons:contract, machines always broken
Thoughts: I hate Gold's Gym Northland. The contract is a huge hassle (and even when my contract was "frozen" for a period of time, I was still charged). I use the ladies are upstairs and it is clearly neglected (where machines go to die I guess). Machines are either constantly broken, malfunctioning (making a lot of noise), or the tvs on them are broken. Making a note of it with front desk staff does nothing. I have been here for 3 years and that has always been the case. Now that GoodLife is taking over hopefully things will change....

Thoughts:i would never join golds again!! and I make sure to let everyone i know know it

Pros: not too expensive.
Cons: Wouldn't wish the hassle of ending a completed contract on anyone. Unscrupulous borderline criminal business. STAY FAR AWAY!!!! A class action lawsuit has to be in works. Rude incompetent staff. Dirty facilities. Poor equipment maintenance. Unsanitary change rooms. Poor parking.

Cost of membership:
Way too expensive. Also getting out a contract is a pain in the butt. I sent in a letter of cancellation, 6 months later I got a call from Collections I wasn't paying. What? I called Golds, and they CONFIRMED I had sent in my letter. 1 Month later I get another call from Collections. Golds told me they will look into it. A month later I got another call from Collections, the chick told me they've already sent the request so there isn't much they can do about it.

Worst service ever. I eventually got them to cancel my membership but I was at the end of my wits. I can't believe they would treat paying customers like this, the place is a joke.

Descent equipment, not too busy in the evenings or lunch.

Don't like ownership group. Membership hassles are awful.

Unless you have some reason to go here (You're close and its convenient) look elsewhere. If you are going to come here, KEEP EVERYTHING contracts, receipts, whatever they give you, hold on to it and make sure you get everything. If the scenario up top happened to anyone unprepared, you could be in some serious trouble.

Pros: none
Cons: Everything
If you like being stared down by a bunch of juice monkeys, guidos, and even the staff, then this is the gym for you. The bathrooms smell like aftermath of a gay orgy where everyone pissed on each other when they weren't shitting on each others dicks. Equipment will break and take eons to be repaired. One water fountain that's broke all the time, and it's on the opposite side of the gym as the free weights and machines, so you have to walk between 100 people doing cardio all facing you, just to get a sip of water, like it's some kind of red carpet event where nobody claps, and everyone silently judges. Less than 15 parking stalls in front of the gym, and a fair walk for the rest. Some guy from their supplements shop tried to sell me steroids. The list goes on... Avoid this gym.

I started as member of Northland golds, but after a move to the south end of calgary, I wanted to go to Golds Mckenzie, but as author above wrote, I wasn't able to just start going to that location, I had to pay a $60 transfer fee. I also found both locations to be run by people with bad attitudes, employees could barely look up at you when you come in or leave, let alone say "hello".

Once my 3 year membership was up, they charged me another 60 to switch my membership to a month to month billing, which they also raised 15%. Apparently this is somewhere on your contract, so make sure you read every inch of fine print. So I called to cancel, and was told that I had to go down to the gym and meet with an employee, who filled out a cancellation sheet, signed it and told me that usually you would have to give a 91days notice to cancel, but because I was in to see her and she was signing the paper work that I just had to mail it in and that would count as the notice. A few days afterI got a call from the headoffice, Northlands location, the female who called me, first asked why I was cancelling, after I explained that I didn't appreciate them charging me extra after 3years of my business and that I thought that was pretty greedy, her tone changed and now instead of trying to get me back, she was just going to tell me that I still had to give 91 days no matter what the previous employee told me, and if I didn't pay they would send it to collections.

Had to walk in and waited there for almost an hour to get hold of somebody. NEVER HAVE A MEMBERSHIP WITH GOLDS!!!!Thoughts:

Cost of membership: $45/month
Pros: Good equipment. They have some great group exercise instructors, especially some of the spin instructors.
Cons: The biggest problem with this gym is the staff. They are more concerned with their cell phones than they are with helping members. I have watched almost every personal trainer in the gym text on their phone while their client does an exercise incorrectly. Half of the staff don't know the gym's protocols. I had my cell phone stolen and the staff working didn't even know I had to fill out an incident report(Probably because it was the staff that stole my phone).
Thoughts: If this gym wasn't so so close to where I live, I would never become a member. The service is just too poor.
The best gym in the city is (and why): The Cardel Place. Staff are helpful and friendly, equipment is of high quality and well maintained. As far as chain gym's go, Goodlife is far superior to Gold's, if Gold's didn't have their loyal following of Arnold wannabes they would have a hard time staying in business.

Cost of membership:average
Pros:can't think of any
Cons:the worst, most stuck up management in NW calgary
Thoughts:they throw away their only upper abs. machine (Jun 2011), and replace it with a lower abs. machine, so they have 3 low abs., but 0 upper abs. They had 5 large yellow mattresses, now down to 1 mattress. Never repair damage padding, then months later, they put new piece of leather on top of the damage leather, but the foam underneath is still badly damaged, they don't replace the foam.
The best gym in the city is (and why): definitely won't be gold's gym

Cost of membership: $60/month + signing fees ($100$300)

Pros: ok equipment

Cons: The unethical (illegal?) contract

Thoughts: The contract is unethical at best and possibly illegal. Even when your contract up, you are automatically renewed for another 3 month contract which you have to pay in full. A large portion of existing small claims court cases currently are with Gold's Gym. The processes of termination your membership after when your contract is legitimately over is a huge hassle and involves sending registered mail in writing to their head office ($10) and the cost of 3 months of membership. I would not recommend anyone sign up with Gold's since you may almost need a lawyer to stop payments. Again, we're not talking about cancelling the contract midway, this is the process *after* responsibly fulfilling the entire contract length. I suspect a class action lawsuit would be in the works.

The best gym in the city is (and why): any gym that allows monthly memberships

Reviewer: Katie

Date: 12/23/2010

Cost of membership: WAY too much considering the service

Pros: There's never anyone there (perhaps because its dirty and the machines are sometimes broken)

Cons: Salespeople lie to you when selling you the contract, which you realize once you try to get out of it (which will NEVER happen). Staff pretend to be managers, and you are informed by other staff members later that they were 'just pretending.' The gym adds inexplicable charges to your account, which you have no choice but to pay (because they have your credit card). They automatically renew your contract (which you are forced to pay), won't cancel unless you give them $200 and 90 days written notice (and you must pay during this time). They also refuse to respond to complaints from the Better Business Bureau.

Thoughts: It is IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of management. I have left phone messages, notes at the counter, sent letters to owners/managers, threatened to not pay until contacted. NONE of it works. A year and a half later and I am still waiting for a call. STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THIS GYM. THEY WILL SCAM YOU.
