Cost of membership:$100 and $20 month to month
Pros:it's close to my location
Cons:The "Trainers" aren't actual trainers. The girl that gave me my 1 time free training session told me that she was a dancer and never trained. They told me I had 10 days to get a refund. It's now been 3 months and I have yet to have one of my many calls/faxes/emails returned. Shame on them! They have stolen from me! Finally I feel like I'm always being watched and they are always interrupting me and asking me if my friends will join. Like Come on!!!
Thoughts:A totally shady company.
The best gym in the city is (and why): The YWCA at college and Dovercourt.
I love this gym!! It's clean. Massive and has a pool. Nobody will bother you. The instructors are kind and talented. The place extremely clean.

I have been a member of the Main & Danforth FitnessOne club for almost 10 years. my monthly rate is only 8.01 per month! less than 120 a year! The staff are nice and helpful; I don't think they are personal trainers they did give me an effetive interval routine that is kicking my own ass, but my freind who is a certified personal trainer worked there 6 yers ago and it wasn't required that anyone had that certification that's the only reason I'm kind of skeptical that they are personal trainers, because at the time my freind worked there for a few months they only paid 12/hr. so she left. Anyways, i don't mind because i have workout experience so i don't really need a trainer plus i used to be a member at Premier and never ever used their trainers (too costly) so yeah, what's the difference if you don't use a trainer. they have lots and lots of equipment, big open spaces for areobics/streches, I'm never waiting for treadmill/machines or weights unless i go at the prime hour (right after work) 56pm. I don't use their showers, never have, but i've heard there are in poor shape again for me, i like to get home and take a shower in private always have even when i was with premier, so I'm not missing that.. there are no water fountains which sucks, but they do sell bottled water in a vending machine, or you get into the habit of bringing your own. I've NEVER been asked/hounded to recruit more members in almost 10 yrs there!! so i don't really beleive that the staff do this, also after nearly 10 yrs here, i don't think bankruptcy is on the horizon here. Also in almost 10 years here my month rate of $8.01 has never changed I've never had to 'fight' for adjustments in their charges.. so I'm very very skeptical of all these haters. It's a no frills gym. for 815 dollars/ a month you'll never find a safer place to workout that has so many machines and tools major bang for your buck. you might have to pay the 199 up front in our first year, but any year after that, it'll be low low low investment. at premier i was paying nearly 400 a year.. every year. and personally i'm not omfortable with meatheads staring at me running on the treadmill and watching me do my leglifts, their women's area is sooo small it's like a small prison and when the door opens as a woman enteres all the men turn their heads to have a look in each and every time! Argh. oh sorry went on a rant about premier! Anyways, yeah if you have your own motivation and know how to use youtube (so you pick up your own routines/moves) this is a great workout space with warm staff and the workout floor is always being cleaned. it's the NoFrills of gyms. for low price quit complaining.

Fitness one: Main & Danforth. Billed a friend for 5 months after cancellation. Left tons of messages that they ignored. Constantly bothering people in the middle of workouts trying to get their friends to join, lots of equipment that does not work, staff that don't know anything about fitness. I also get the feeling that their "trainers" are not certified or really don't know anything about fitness or health. Showers out of order, bathroom out of order and so on.....

lol i wonder who is writing all those bad reviews. sounds like it must be the same person. my friends and i have been members for over 6 years and LOVE fitness one.
most of the members we talk to are very happy and the staff are great. i'm not sure if maybe just this one location was bad but i have to about 3 different ones and they have all be amazing.
you simply cannot get a membership for $15 a month anywhere in the city with so much equipment.
i have lost over 35 pounds and feel i owe my whole life to fitness one.
they care. its a great place to work out.

Yonge/Charles location closed without notice. Tiny lockers, and actually found a cockroach in a locker once. Staff were apathetic at best. Broken machines, poor air quality.

They shut down the location with no notice to members and canceled everyone's service because it wasn't making enough money. I joined three months ago and therefore paid my initiation fees and signed a one year contract only to have it canceled on me. DO NOT JOIN FITNESS ONE.

Fitness One is a terrible Gym all around. The staff is under paid and over worked and none have any sort of qualifications other then what Fitness One claims as their "Fitness One Personal Trainer Training" They offer free programs and assessments but most of the staff couldnt tell you about target heart rate and body fat % other then the *over 25% is bad" BS they get told to say. They offer deals which are never really deals..its the same plan offered year round and worded different. They offer free Months for those who refer other members but if you don't hound them you will never see the free time you were promised. The owner is a complete a'hole and shouldnt be running a womens gym. He took over his daddies business and treats all his staff terribly making empty promises and threating to fire them if they don't get on the floor and annoy the current members for referrals. The only good thing about Fitness One is If you know what you are doing and know how to train its not a bad gym for just under 400.00 a year. The equipment is not maintained so be careful. The only reason I am still a member is its the closest gym to me, the cheapest and I know about training so don't need to seek the advice of the untrained staff

I noticed they were charging me more monthly than what I agreed on. I am very disappointed that they can not give me the price that is in the agreement and the employee that I signed the agreement with left the gym. I feel very ripped off, and that my consumer rights are violated. I am debating to take this to my credit card company.

when I joined this gym I was closer to their Peter St location which was fairly new but have moved closer to the Yonge St locale and hate it the building is old with carpenting throughout so you can imagine how stuffy & hot that is in the summer also everything looks dirty I ended my membership it was cheap but I ended up not going

This is the second time i have been a part of this gym and once again I am quitting. I have been trying to quit for 2 weeks now but everytime i go in, no one is available to cancel my membership. I wrote several letters yet no one has yet to reply.

A staff member told me that the company is in financial trouble - that's why it's taking so long to finish the renos - and perhaps why people are not getting their refunds. I'd stay clear of this place in case they go bankrupt.

Warning - this gym is terrible. Dirty, broken equipment, completely understaffed. I decided to exercise my option and leave within the 10 day window and I am still waiting for my refund! That was over three months ago. Please think long and hard before joining this gym.
Reviewer: Beth
This gym turned out to be a big disappointment. They were under reno's which have now taken over 1.5 years and barely anything accomplished, it's dirty, equipment is constantly broken and when I cancelled, I still have yet to receive my refund which I've been asking for for 3 months now, apparently they are famous for this. DO NOT USE THIS GYM. For $15 more a month you are into a so much better facility.
