Exercise Questions | Toning down bulky quads?

I have been working out for nearly 20 years, and have always had an issue with maintaining good proportion. I am quite nicely toned and fairly muscular in my upper body and abdominals, so no complaints there. Where I have always had an issue is with my legs as they become "stocky" very easily. I have to forgo squats, lunges, deadlifts, even stairmasters and cycling activities as they pile on bulkiness to my upper legs and glutes. Can anyone recommend some exercises which will lengthen, and tone down the quads etc.?

Both dynamic and static flexibility training would help you with a little more emphasis on static stretching (post workout/warm up). Target every region of the thigh; posterior (single leg raise hold), medial (butterfly stretch), lateral (piriformis stretch), and anterior (lunge stretch).

Try doign cardio exercises with less intensity, ie. long distance running.
