Weight & Fat Loss | Muscle weight gain vs fat loss

I have just had my annual fitness appraisal and the test shows that I lost 6% body fat from last year. That being said, I haven't really lost more than a pound or two scale-wise and my clothes don't fit noticably different. Doing the math, it says that I gained 9 lbs of muscle from a year ago. These tests were done by different people but both had considerable experience with the pinch test. Can I consider these results accurate or should I take them with a grain of salt? I am a 24 year old female and I work out most days, weights and cardio.

Well, if you are only working out 3 days per week I would not suggest doing a split routine. You won't see the gains you want because your muscles are never being pushed to grow. But you have the right idea for a proper circuit if you wanted to split it up. You can superset with : chest back, tri bis, shoulders legs... Try that for about 2 months then switch it up. Hope that helps. PT

Thanks for the information. I have checked out different websites for circuit programs, but I was wondering if they always had to be whole body. My schedule varies throughout the week, sometimes I can go to the gym 3 days in a row, sometimes I can't go for 3 days. I would like a routine that allows me to do the circuit consecutive days, preferably with the muscle breakdowns I mentioned below. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me ideas for creating a program? Would supersetting also help me, I was thinking of doing 1/2 hr cardio, one superset (3 sets), 5 mins cardio (repeat 3 times with different exercises), then stretching.

You can start by doing a circuit training program which is resistance training but you never stop to rest and it burns more calories than any other resistance training program can give you. In the next post I will list the program and articles that you should start to read about a circuit. Thanks, PT

So now that I have this muscle gain I want to curb it and lose the 10-15 lbs of fat that would bring me down to under 20% body fat (I am now at 23%). I normally do half a hour on the eliptical then about an hour of weights, alternating from legs and abs, back and shoulders, and chest and arms; 3 sets of about 6 exercises, about 12 reps each. I normally do that about once a week including a boot camp class and a yoga class. What changes can I make to make this more of a fat loss routine rather than a muscle building? Thanks!

I am actually a fitness appraiser and I know that sometimes results can vary. However, even if the results are not correct you shouldnt think their not! You earned that gain in muscle, and its hard to notice what you would look and feel like a year ago.

Those are great results from your appraisal, keep up the good work! PT
