Some elite level athletes can manage a personal/emotional/family life quite well and some cannot. If you know someone who you think is having this issue talk to them about it and ask them what their goals are in life. You have asked a very 'grey' question and it varies upon each individual.
The condition being discussed here is mostly for the general public that has an obsession with exercise which is affecting his/her overall well-being.
Thanks for your clarification. I think this issue has become much more prevelant in the past 5 years than ever before.
Take care and happy training,

Anorexia athletica is the name of the disorder when athletes get anorexia. Athletes will develop anorexia because of pressure to make weight (in sports such as wrestline or boxing), pressure from sports focusing on my "looks" such as figure skating and gymnastics or endurance sports where lean bodies are more "desireable" such as long distance running.
Athletes tend to have a strong drive to compete and win and some will go over board to achieve this...sometimes resulting in anorexic behavior.

As with any disorder it could be a variety of factors.
A. Genetic Predisposition B. Media C. Peer Pressure D. Expectations of Parental Figures E. Depression and unhappiness with ones appearance.
Or all the above.
There isnt a distinct cause and effect relationship between any one of these but there is definitely a significant correlation between all of them.
I hope that answers your question.
