Exercise Questions | My pushups are getting harder

Years ago I read that a fit man can do 40 pushups. So I started a program where I did 10 pushups in 4 sets a minute a part the first day, waited 3-4 days then did 10 pushups in 4 sets waiting 55 seconds in between. Each time I took off 5 seconds. And it worked like a charm. I was able to do 40 pushups inside 6 weeks.

So fast forward 10 years. I am now 43 and decided to start working out again. I started a couch to 5k program and stuck in my pushup routine in the warmup. Except when I got to 20 seconds inbetween sets I could no longer keep up.

I have hit a wall. After 2 weeks of doing 4 reps with 20 second intervals, I cannot move on.

What is going on and why cant I move past this?

Mike

Hey Mike,

I wouldnt suggest that doing 40 pushups indicates 'fitness'. Yes,k its a goal but it doesnt mean that the rest of your body other than your chest, triceps and front deltoids are fatigue resistant. You should train your entire body with beginner weight training routine.
