How do I know how much weight to start with in my exercise program?

The amount of weight depends on a multiple of factors. But when you are starting to train you should be able to do 12-15 repititions easily. After about a month of training your body should be ready to start to train to failure. ('when you cannot continue to do any more repititions') Ex. My goal is to train for muscular definition, I will fail between my 12th to 15th repitition.
