Exercise Questions | Abdominal separation


I had surgery in February and it was the 2nd time that my abodmen was opened in the same area. My doctor told me that my six pack muscles are separated, about 3 or 4 fingers. I am looking for some safe exercises to help pull these muscles back togeather. I have looked on many websites but, am not sure exactly what I should or shouldn't be doing. I went back to exercising after the recovery but, it seems that made the condition worse because I was doing crunches and such on machines using weights. I appreciate any input you may have. Thanks~
