Actually if you are taking in enough of the right calories you can do cardio and weight lifting at the same time. The only time you are losing muscle is the fact that you are not taking in enough protien to make sure you are not catabolising your muscle.

As for abs....it is actaully false on running for defined abs. Its actaully how little body fat you have on your stumach. Make sure that your not only doin crunches. Your body will get used to it and won't get better. Try things like bicycles, flutter kicks, and x-over crunches.

Since getting out of highschool bein track captain and now bein a personal trainer this qusetion has popped up alot and have read alot of myths on cardio and weight lifting.

Bein a long distance runner/bodybuilder is thought impossible but is far from it. I have proven that one!

Well from experience this is my advice to you. You need to focus on only one thing at a time. Spend 2 months focusing on just bulking and adding weight,by eating healthy protein and complex carb rich foods, and working out in the 8-10 rep range. Then spend the next couple of months cutting(toning up). This is done by increasing cardio, and training with weights 12-15 reps. Lower your calorie intake.
