Exercise Questions | Starting exercises for slim body type

Date Posted: 8/27/2008 6:14:07 AM
Hey there
I am 24 yrs old, 6'2" tall and weigh only 140 lbs. Last year I had picked up on soccer and used to play quite a lot because of which I have fine legs but this has also resulted in very lean upper body, read bony.
Now I want to start with exercising and gaining some weight. Also, I dont want to hit a gym straight away but want to start on my own and after a month or so join a gym. Could you please advice with what exercises should I start and what diet regime should I follow. I am not looking for enormous muscles but a lil above average...something like the Brad Pitt, :) (I was inspired by the Brad Pitt workout)
I have started with jogging and push ups, 3 sets of 12 each....is this right thing to do?
Please help as this leanness is killing my confidence and I feel ugly towards my body...

That's a great start. You want to gain muscle mass and so keep up the jogging, but not too intense or often, maybe 2 - 3 x per week. When you're doing push ups, go for maximum reps. Keep going until you can't anymore then rest about 1 - 2 min and go again. You may not be able to do as many in your second and third sets as in your first, but that's ok. Also, you should add pull ups or chin ups if at all possible. Push ups and pull ups combined are a pretty great upper body workout. Make sure you change up your hand position for push ups, doing wide hands, hands directly below your chest and everything in between. This will engage your muscles differently and keep them responding. Do the same for pull ups, change your grip from forward to reverse and change your grip width.

Lastly on exercise, since you are already very lean, you may as well shred up your abs. Nothing boosts your confidence more than a six pack. Any routine on youtube will do, just stick to it.

Do your push up pull up and abs day 3x per week to prep for the gym.

Make sure you are eating lots and lots of food. Good healthy food, you know the type, the non-processed stuff. Get loads of protein.

Hope these suggestions help.
