Sports Specific | Mixture of excersices?

I want to gain some serious power and explosiveness for football. I've heard that going heavy and cleans, dead lifts, and squats are essential along with a lot of heavy compound exercises like bench press are the way to go. Should i mix it up with a few isolation exercises here and there or just stick the other stuff?

Explosiveness? I would train with plyometric stuff. Jump squats, jump split squats, plyometric push ups, etc. Good for explosiveness, high reps will make up for the lack of extra weight.

Isolation exercises won't build functional strength. Isolation exercises are for bodybuilders. Stick with your power/strength training. Read some of Pavel Tsatsouline's stuff.

In a nutshell, his training principles advocate training very heavy and very often, never going near failure. The theory goes that staying clear of failure will allow you to use perfect form and maximum power for each rep, as well as keeping your body "fresh as a cucumber", not burnt out. Your muscles will learn to contract fully and quickly every time, no saving energy for later reps. He also advocates training the same lifts every day, no rest days, and training more than once a day.

Regardless of the approach you take to training, sticking with power/strength training and staying away from bodybuilding will give you the functional power and explosiveness you want.
