Foods that Cause Gas
What causes gas?
Gas (or flatulence) in
the digestive tract occurs because of normal
fragmentation of certain indigestible food items by nontoxic bacteria seen in the large
intestine. Swallowed air, otherwise known as aerophagia, is usually produced when a
small amount of air enters the intestine while eating as well as drinking. This condition is
most common in people who smokes and uses chewing gums frequently.
A combination of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and swallowed air leaves the
stomach through belching or burping. On the other hand, the gas that is produced as a
result of fragmentation of indigestible food items will contain hydrogen, carbon dioxide
and sometimes methane and will leave the stomach through the rectum. However, foods
that cause gas in one person may not necessarily produce gas in another person, since the
level of certain kind of bacteria that could eliminate hydrogen may vary from person to
person.
In addition, there is an increased tendency for developing gas in people with certain kinds
of diseases in the form of inflammatory bowel disease. Gas will be accompanied by a
number of symptoms like belching, bloating, flatulence and abdominal pain.
Foods that cause gas usually contain certain types of sugars as well as soluble
fiber, which in turn will not digest in the stomach, thereby making their way to the
intestine, from where it is fragmented by bacteria and thus resulting in the release of
gas. Mentioned below a list of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, whole grain items,

Al though intestinal gas and bloating are common and natural, it may not be a
comfortable experience. Likewise,
reducing the intake of certain kinds of gassy food items such as cabbage, fatty meats, and
fried items can also help you overcome gas. Further, avoid drinking carbonated drinks,
as they tend to produce gas in your digestive tract. Above all, consult a doctor if there
is excessive gas or bloating, as it may be due to some health problems in the form of
irritable bowel syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
